SUMMARY:OMH Assisted Outpatient Treatment Focus Group
DESCRIPTION:The New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) is in the process of evaluating Assisted Outpatient Treatment or AOT  – also known as Kendra’s Law – and planning for a new study to evaluate the AOT program.   We have set up a focus group for the public mental health system – providers – with experience serving individuals enrolled in AOT. \nThe purpose of this focus group is to help us obtain input from you\, as a provider of service to individuals on AOT\, about what’s most important to study.  We’re also seeking input from individuals with lived experience related to AOT\, their family members and the advocacy community.  For information about those focus groups\, please email Suzanne Feeney\, Suzanne.Feeney2@omh.ny.gov \nFocus Group Information: February\, 2nd\, 2023   10:00am-11:30am \n Registration Link: \nhttps://meetny.webex.com/weblink/register/rebeb923e6b4a6703c9f59352e4f4a75a \nHistory \nOn August 9\, 1999\, the Governor signed Kendra’s Law (Chapter 408 of the Laws of 1999)\, creating a statutory framework for court-ordered Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) to ensure that individuals with mental illness and a history of hospitalizations or violence participate in community-based services appropriate to their needs. The law became effective in November of 1999 and reviewed periodically by the legislature for continuation.  Since that time\, the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) has been evaluating the impact of Kendra’s Law on individuals receiving court-ordered services. This past Budget session\, in April of 2022\, included several new substantive changes\, and again extends the law until 2027. DESCRIPTION:Governor Hochul’s 2023 State of the State plan and Fiscal Year 2024 Executive Budget include historic proposals and resources that will allow the Office of Mental Health (OMH) to expand\, strengthen\, and revitalize the State’s mental healthcare system. Your input will be integral in OMH’s planning process for this expansion. \nIn the months ahead\, we will be developing new programs and policies that will greatly expand access to housing\, outpatient\, school-based clinics\, and hospital services\, and increase insurance coverage for mental health services. \nTo ensure we make the most of this unprecedented opportunity\, OMH is seeking input from valued partners\, providers\, advocates\, people and families that receive services\, community leaders\, and community members. We encourage service providers to share this announcement with the people and families they serve and assist with registration if needed. \nWe will be hosting a series of virtual and in-person community engagement feedback sessions to gain insight from your experiences and knowledge. Your feedback will help us determine how to best implement new programming and use new resources to enhance the mental health system\, increase access to mental health services\, and eliminate service gaps and promote equity in access for all New Yorkers\, while fortifying the continuum of care. \nOMH leadership will provide an overview of the planning initiatives and then we will break into groups for focused discussion.
