Women with substance use disorders (SUD) face distinct health, social, and structural challenges—particularly during pregnancy, the early postpartum period, and involvement with the criminal justice system. These pivotal transitions can heighten vulnerability while also creating important opportunities to connect women with effective, compassionate care. This webinar will examine emerging research on the unique needs of women with SUD, with a particular focus on opioid use disorder (OUD) across these high-stakes settings and life transitions. Presenters will discuss landmark findings from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Clinical Trials Network study evaluating new medication treatment options for opioid use disorder during pregnancy and share the results for both mom and baby. New educational materials to help patients, families, and communities better understand OUD and treatment and recovery pathways, stigma, and legal protections will also be shared to work towards improving health literacy, maternal health, and recovery outcomes. The session will also explore the institutional, social, and medical barriers experienced by justice-involved women and highlight evidence-based approaches that promote sustained recovery, health, and dignity.
