Health Equity Training Program for Downstate Members

Earlier this year we announced that the NYS Council and CHCANYS were awarded additional funding from The Delta Center for a Thriving Safety Net through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to provide specialized multi-session diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training to our member organizations. As members of both organizations look to refine our work in advancing justice and health equity, this is a unique opportunity to participate in training specifically created for primary care and behavioral health staff. 

Our second series of DEI training programs will be offered to downstate members (located in NYC and Long Island) beginning on June 15, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. The first series, offered to upstate members, has been very well received. The training series is provided virtually in four (4) sessions on the third Tuesday of every month.

Individuals/organizations interested in registering should: 

• Commit to participate in all 4 training sessions (see dates below);
• Serve as a change agent for their community center or behavioral health agency in sharing the information learned with other staff; and
• Join a concluding meeting to share experiences, learnings, and change agent strategies with other attendees from CHCANYS and the NYS Council.

 There will be a limited number of spots available for this training, so registration will be limited to up to two individuals per organization and is first come, first served. Substitutions are allowed, if necessary, to ensure participation in all four programs.  

The training will be presented by Tekisha Dwan Everette, Ph.D. of Health Equity Solutions. Topics for the four-module training include the following: 

Module 1 – Foundational Health Equity Concepts – June 15
Focusing on a deeper understanding of key DEI concept, how they relate to health and social determinants of health, and evaluating them through different health care delivery modes, including telehealth. 

Module 2 – Racism, Anti-Racism, and Racial Equity – July 20
Understanding these terms in a health context and their relationship to health and health outcomes; also focused on opportunities and challenges with telehealth. 

Module 3 – The Role of PC and BH in Health Equity – August 17
Exploring the connections between primary care, behavioral health, and health equity and how, in partnership, health equity can be improved. 

Module 4 – Providing Care with a Cultural Humility Lens – September 21
Developing an understanding of the principles of cultural humility while also providing examples of this through telehealth settings.
