CMMS establishing MFTs and MHCs as Medicare Providers 1/1/24

September 15, 2023

A Message from the National Council:

We want to share an update from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) that will impact treatment practitioners and services.

CMS will establish marriage and family therapists and mental health counselors as Medicare provider types on Jan. 1, 2024. Learn more and please keep the following in mind:

  • You must enroll in Medicare to submit claims and get paid for covered items or services.
  • You can submit enrollment applications after the calendar year (CY) 2024 Physician Fee Schedule final rule is on display at the Federal Register (around Nov. 1); we will notify you via email when this happens.
  • Your effective enrollment date won’t be earlier than Jan. 1, 2024.

Until then, learn how to become a Medicare provider or supplier; review the Medicare enrollment application (online or PDF); and begin gathering your supporting documents.

For additional support, access the Medicare Enrollment for Providers & Suppliers webpage, read these FAQ or contact us with questions. We are ready to support you!
