CMS Announces State Recipients for the Innovation
in Behavioral Health (IBH) Model

December 18, 2024

Earlier today CMS announced that NY’s application to participate in a new 8 year voluntary state model (the Integrated Behavioral Health or IBH model) that aims to improve behavioral/physical health outcomes and overall quality of care for Medicare/Medicaid populations, has been approved.  See more below.

I am working to secure information as to the specific areas of New York where the model will be implemented since this initiative does not involve all areas of the state.

CMS Announces State Recipients for the Innovation in Behavioral Health (IBH) Model

Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that state Medicaid agencies in Michigan, New York, Oklahoma, and South Carolina have been selected to take part in the Innovation in Behavioral Health (IBH) Model.

Under the IBH Model, CMS, participating states, and community-based behavioral health providers will collaborate to improve the overall quality of care and outcomes for adults enrolled in Medicaid and Medicare with moderate to severe mental health conditions and/or substance use disorders.

The IBH Model supports specialty behavioral health practices in the delivery of integrated care in outpatient settings by prioritizing close collaboration with primary care and other physical health providers with a goal to address all aspects of a patient’s care.

The IBH Model will start on January 1, 2025, and run for 8 years. Oklahoma is implementing the IBH model statewide, and Michigan, New York, and South Carolina are implementing the model in designated sub-state geographic service areas.
