National Stakeholder Calls

June 21, 2022

Below and at the links below please find information from HHS’ Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on its plans for the COVID-19 public health emergency and Medicaid and CHIP continuous enrollment unwinding.  Please note that the communication below clearly states it is not clear when the PHE will end and the webinar described is a proactive conversation starter about the end of the PHE, whenever it occurs.

Specifically, below please find the link for a webinar on unwinding to be held tomorrow.

[We] wanted to  . . . share some additional information regarding the COVID-19 public health emergency and Medicaid and CHIP continuous enrollment unwinding.

Over the COVID-19 public health emergency, the federal government eased rules in order to prevent people with Medicaid and CHIP from losing their health coverage during the pandemic. When the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) does eventually end, states will be required, over time, to restart eligibility renewals for all people enrolled in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). This process is often referred to as the “unwinding”.

We don’t know when the Public Health Emergency will end, but CMS wants to make sure that our partners are educated and prepared for when the unwinding does occur. CMS has created a set of tools for partners to learn more about Unwinding and assist our partners as they share information with their networks.

The Unwinding Homepage is the centralized location where states and stakeholders can learn more about Unwinding and access resources to help them plan and prepare. On this webpage, you can find the Unwinding Communications Toolkit available in English and Spanish as well as a set of fillable graphics. CMS has also created a Medicaid and CHIP Beneficiary Resource page for people enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP to help them prepare to renew their coverage when states restart eligibility renewals after the end of the Public Health Emergency.

We would also like to invite you to join CMS and HHS for our Medicaid and CHIP Continuous Enrollment Unwinding partner education webinar series on the fourth Wednesday of every month from 12:00-1:00pm. Recordings and transcripts from past webinars can be found on our National Stakeholder Calls Webpage.

If you would like to talk further about Unwinding and CMS’s resources, please let me know and I am happy to set-up a call for us to connect.
