Potentially Good News from Board of Regents

May 8, 2024

The NYS Board of Regents convenes a Committee on Professional Practice to propose modifications to existing regulations and administrative practices.  Yesterday, the Committee proposed, for review by the Regents, an agenda that included amendments to the current requirements relating to social work and mental health practitioner supervision and accreditation.  Currently the requirement is that supervision be face to face.  The amendment would allow supervision to be provided via secure technology and no longer have to be in-person for LMFTS, LMHCs, Psychoanalysts and LCSWs. This is consistent with COVID rules and how it is done for psychologists.

The Board of Regents reviewed the amendment yesterday and agreed to publish it in the NY State Register for a 60 day comment period.   The NYS Council will weigh in on this with vigorous support for the amendment.  The Board of Regents will vote on this amendment at its September meeting and (unless there is an issue) it will go into effect on Sept 25, 2024.
