Take Action to Repeal Redundant and Unfair Executive Law

June 9, 2021

The NYS Council has been working with other nonprofit organizations and umbrella associations across the state to ensure a bill that would repeal redundant 990 filing obligations placed on nonprofits via Executive Law at the beginning of this year is repealed.    The new Law requires nonprofits to report some of the same information already required by the NYS Charities Bureau to the NY department of State, the difference being that the Law did not include provisions to ensure that donor information including name and address of financial supporters is kept confidential.

We support this bill for many reasons!  Please take a moment today to take action.  Use the information below from Nonprofit New York to make your voice heard in the final hours of the legislative session.

THANK YOU!!

S4817A(Krueger) passed the full State Senate today! Thank you Senator Krueger for your leadership and sponsoring this bill, and thank you to all NYS Council members  who mobilized to make this happen! The bill must now clear Assembly Rules and go to the full Assembly, and we need you to take action today. The final day of the state legislative session is tomorrow.

Dear [LEGISLATOR],

I am writing to you today from [YOUR ORGANIZATION]. We need S4817A (Krueger) /A1141A (Paulin) passed this session, in order to avoid a redundant new tax filing requirement for nonprofits that we are unprepared for. S4817A cleared the Senate and we need the Assembly to pass the bill. Over 400 organizations from across the state have signed on in support of this legislation. This bill would eliminate a new, redundant Department of State filing requirement for nonprofits registered with the Charities Bureau. This pandemic year is a particularly bad time to impose new bureaucratic burdens on nonprofits. We urge you to please pass this bill as soon as possible.
