Urgent: Federal Advocacy Action Needed

June 30, 2025

Whether you’ve been engaged in this fight for months or you’re just getting involved, please do what you can to take part in this effort to stop this bill.  Thank you!

Congress is moving toward passing a reconciliation bill that includes changes to the Medicaid program that would cause approximately 8 million people to lose Medicaid coverage.

Proposed changes to Medicaid, including implementing work reporting requirements and restricting eligibility and funding, would be particularly harmful to people with addiction. An analysis suggests that at least 1.6 million people with Medicaid currently receiving substance use disorder treatment would become uninsured, cutting off their access to lifesaving care.

We know many of you have already sent messages to Congress this year to protect Medicaid – thank you! But we still need your help.

As Congress moves closer to passing this bill, New York’s Republican lawmakers in the House need to hear about the harm this could cause constituents like you. Even if you have sent a message before, we need you to send another now to urge Congress to protect Medicaid and access to addiction care.

Below is a new Action Alert from FamiliesUSA and it provides another option for ways you can weigh in early and often.

Late Saturday night, Senate Republicans narrowly passed a motion to proceed, allowing debate on their version of the reconciliation bill to begin. While they cleared this first procedural hurdle, a number of Republican senators continue to voice concerns about the health sections of the bill that make deep cuts to Medicaid. Senate leadership hopes to call a final vote on their bill late tonight or early tomorrow morning. Thus, it is imperative that you continue to contact your Senators and encourage them to vote NO.

  • (866) 426-2631 or (202) 224-3121 (Capitol switchboard)
  • Don’t forget about district offices!

For call scripts, see these resources compiled by our partner Community Catalyst.

If the Senate passes their version of the bill, we will need to immediately turn our attention to the House to encourage a NO vote there.

Tomorrow, as Congress proceeds with their plans, please join Families USA, Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP), Community Catalyst, and NHeLP, on Tuesday, July 1 from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. ET to walk through the latest intel and updates around the health-related provisions of the reconciliation package, its impact, and strategies for next steps. Register here.
